Technical Assistance Overview

The Technical Assistance (ADB TA9993–THA: Climate Change Adaptation in Agriculture for Enhanced Recovery and Sustainability of Highlands), funded by the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia-Pacific (JFPR), will help local governments demonstrate to highland farmers climate-resilient practices and technologies for improving agricultural productivity, value addition and food traceability, and tap into local knowledge to enhance food security in a changing climate. It will also help boost rural employment and support Thailand’s economic recovery amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in association with Nippon Koei Co, Ltd and Team Consulting Engineering and Management Public Company Limited (the Consultant) has convened a capable team of international and national experts to assist the implementation of TA activities and work closely with MOAC and ADB to provide support in building Thailand’s technical and institutional capacities to assess agriculture sector vulnerabilities, demonstrate climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices and digital technologies for traceability of agri-food products, and support local governments to integrate climate change concerns in agriculture planning.

Contribution to SDGs and Thailand's Agriculture Related Strategies

This TA project will contribute to a number of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely SDG1: No Poverty; SDG2: Zero Hunger; SDG5: Gender Equality; SDG6: Clean Water and Sanitation; SDG9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; SDG10: Reduced Inequalities; SDG12: Responsible Consumption and Production; SDG13: Climate Action; and SDG15: Life on Land. In specific this TA will support Thailand in its efforts to achieve SDGs, especially SDG1.4, SDG2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.a, 2.c, SDG5.a, SDG6.6, SDG9.3, SDG10.2, SDG12.8, SDG13.a and SDG15.3, 15.4, 15.5, 15.9 and Thailand’s nationally determined contributions (NDC) under the Paris agreement on climate change.

Furthermore, the TA will address Thailand’s Agriculture and Cooperatives Strategy (2018–2037), Organic Agriculture Strategy (2017–2021), Food Security Strategic Framework (2017–2021), Digital Agriculture Strategy (2017–2021), and Climate Change in Agriculture Strategy (2017–2021) in terms of:

Enhancing production of high-value food that can meet safety and quality demands and standards of domestic consumers and external markets

Deploying technologies focusing on effective, sustainable, and environment-friendly use of agricultural resources
